Maplist suggestions

Post  Tjalbo on Tue Oct 16, 2012 10:24 am

As promised: a list of maps

Essential
dance (dance_neutered)
lostspace2
evil(space)ctf

Prefered
13dream
cupolaarena
dance_inverted
dusty_v2
greatwall_remix
go_v2
lostspace2_inverted

Possible
aggressor
ame7q3ctf
blastedlands
blockscape
boogie_b3
boxflip
ctctf6
destructive
dusty_v2_b (doubled blue bases)
eyeoftheduck
gforce (i think v4; more advanced but without the turrets)
greatdivide
hydronex
lazydusty
leafland
medival_v2
skycastle_b2
skyshaper
soylent
whizard

Rather not
ctf_grudging
eggandbacon
facingworlds
frankishtower
gasolinepowered
pyramid_b3

Correct names with capitalization and underscores may vary, should be overall fairly clear which maps are intended.

Keep in mind: we're playing ctf with minsta and hook. Confrontations and skill make this game fun. Don't do very open and/or large maps (minsta) or maps with very narrow halls/restictions (hook). Closed maps with locked-in flags invite camping. Less is more: a few good maps is better than many bad maps (which won't get played anyway).

Suggestions/criticism/errata/praise in the comments please.

The list I've provided is completely filled by maps from non-members, I think. Membership for map suggestion isn't the issue, if you have a valuable suggestion you're more than welcome to bring it up. The point I was trying to get across is to have a server filled with 'good' maps and get rid of the rest.

My approach (but I don't have a server) would be to start with an empty server and then add maps I'd want to play with a few maps which I dislike but are popular with other players. Another approach, on the DTG server for example, is to have many maps and then leave it to the players to choose one. Seems reasonable but you might be presented with 9 bad options. The map policy on the Element server is a reason for me to avoid that server.

The current situation on the Deadcat server is that it holds many maps, a few (a minority) of which can be found in the map-voting screen. Most maps therefore are never being played unless someone request them specifically through a vcall and that rarely happens. Most of those maps are not-played for a good reason: they suck. Some suck more than others but most of them are really bad: too large, too confusing, too ugly, even downright unplayable (no caps possible). I see no reason to leave them on the server because they make it only harder to select a map which you might want to play. The lsmaps command doesn't provide legible output if you have, say, more than 50 maps on the server (I don't know, I haven't counted them).

I'd want a small map set, all of them 'votable' and occasionally a new map to try out. All the other maps can go, they clutter the lsmaps output and aren't played anyway. The list on top is a first shot, feel free to add to it or criticize it.

About 'eggy': I don't know that map. If this is about a map called 'hamandeggs' or 'eggandham', I'd say it's a bad suggestion. Maps that suck rarely get better by fixing them (fair-dastower, double-miniman come to mind) and creating a bastard child out of extreme-fight and eggandbacon doesn't miraculously create something that's a worthy addition. Agreed, it sucks less than both parents but it's still not good.

Tjalbo first of all on element server is a selected amount of maps and all of them are suggeste by a player who wanted it on our server. This means that all those maps do get playd maybe not by you because you dont like them but others maybe do.

Eggy is either hamandeggs, horror or eggandbacon. Neother you cant deny that that map is playd reguraly (eggandbacon) and many people even said that horror aka hamandeggs is a good map and is playd often on element server. Its also often een vcalled just like powerstation, an other map of that mapmaker.

Dont get me wrong i love the idea but i just would love to see eggandbacon also on deadcat server since there are enough people out there who like that map. Hamandeggs and powerstation just came up my mind because you named it Wink but its always fun to see it on deadcat as well, and if i have to choose powertation would be the best choice Smile

I've discussed the map policy on element with Freakinger for a while and got the impression he was open for suggestions. I didn't ask them to create a server to my liking, just asked him to get rid of the worst maps. Then one day I joined only to find people (incl. Freak) playing opposingcastles7 and that's where I gave up. I don't think I've been on element ever since.

We're playing ctf with minsta and hook and that has some influence on what makes a map 'good' or, if you like, suitable. Eggandham has boxed in flags (makes camping easy) and no particular infrastructure to make hooking interesting.

And, with all respect, I don't give a fuck about what people play; people play (and vcall) ngstation, mentalspace, double-miniman and succer-socks but that doesn't mean you have to have them on a server. As an admin one decides what kind of server one wants to run and when the decision is made to run a minsta server, I'd say that ngstation isn't a valid option anymore. Of course that's just my opinion, I've played often enough on esk to know that some people like to camp next to the flag for 20 minutes.

You might have noticed powerstation is on the dc server (I don't recall naming it though). And, as stated, there isn't a policy in place for accepting maps for inclusion. You'll find Phantomas to be very receptive of suggestions. Powerstation has one big fan and he only needed a little effort to get powerstation included (like mailing the pk3 file to nexuiz at schaltsekun dot de, hint!).

However, my hopes are to reduce the amount of maps on the dc server and by doing that increasing the average quality of the map selection. Powerstation isn't the worst map by far on the server but also doesn't stand out as a particular fun map to play (opinion again: I don't like to get spawnfragged all the time but it seems to appeal to others).

You can join our server again without any danger.
You're always welcome.
